Cryosurgery

Cryosurgery
Cryosurgery Dubai

Cryosurgery is a procedure which is in dermatology used for the removal of certain skin growths by freezing. It is a very effective intervention and it destructs the skin lesion while producing only minimal scars, and giving excellent cosmetic skin improvements. Interventions which include cold and freezing have a very long history, because of the general positive effects cold has on the tissue, since it has anti-inflammatory and pain-killing effects. But previously cold and freezing were used in a more generalized manner, while nowadays they can be used locally, focused on a specific tissue. Being minimally invasive and having excellent results for certain problems, cryosurgery practice is widely spread nowadays, sometimes even for treating serious conditions, such as skin cancer.

How Does Cryosurgery Work?

Cryosurgery has several phases, which all lead to the same result –destruction of lesions. It uses liquid nitrogen, whose temperature is extremely low, and which is applied to the skin either by spray or by a device called cryoprobe. When the cold substance is applied onto the skin, cells are frozen, and during their thaw process they get injured. The temperature of substance applied depends on the condition and type of the skin issue, as well as the speed of the thaw process. After this injury and cell death, follows the inflammation of the surrounding area, which helps in the removal of some of the surrounding cells. Cryosurgery intervention is most commonly used in dermatology for conditions such as:

  • Skin tags
  • Moles
  • Warts
  • Solar keratosis
  • Actinic keratosis
  • Small skin cancers

Since it is a low risk intervention, quick and almost completely non-invasive while leaving almost no traces, it is often a preferred choice both for patients and dermatologists. But when it comes to malignant lesions, a thorough analysis needs to be done in order to determine if cryosurgery is the best and safest treatment modality.

Results and Side Effects

Cryotheraphy is proven to be the first choice of treatment for warts, moles, solar and actinic keratosis etc. As for some other conditions, such as skin cancer, it might not always be the best solution, although it can give excellent results in certain cancer types, such as some superficial skin cancers. Side effects of this treatment are usually very mild and can include some swelling, minimal scarring, forming of blisters, but sometimes if cold allergy is present, some more serious problems may appear. Sometimes skin discoloration may occur, but in most of the cases it will fade away in some time. If you are having a skin problem which you think can be solved by using cryotherapy, we suggest you to make an appointment, and consult our experienced Dubai dermatologist who will help you find the best solution for your skin issue.
